The Railway Board Plans to Replace Traditional Coaches with Panoramic Vistadome Coaches by End of January
Solan, December 27: In an exciting development for travelers, the Kalka-Shimla World Heritage Railway is set to introduce panoramic vistadome coaches, providing tourists with stunning views of the valleys and landscapes along the track. The first train featuring the innovative coaches is expected to be launched by the end of January, with plans to gradually replace all existing coaches with these transparent, high-speed panoramic options.
The new panoramic vistadome coaches are designed to enhance the travel experience by offering passengers unobstructed views of the picturesque surroundings. These coaches will feature large glass windows extending up to the ceiling, allowing travelers to fully appreciate the scenic beauty of the region while traveling in comfort. The special AC coaches will also be soundproof for a more peaceful journey.
Key Features of the Vistadome Coaches:
- Transparent Large Glass Windows: The extended glass windows provide an unmatched view of the valleys and hills, making the journey a visually enriching experience.
- Soundproofing: The coaches are designed to minimize noise, ensuring a quiet and comfortable ride.

The Railway Board has already sent the first batch of panoramic vistadome coaches from the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala to Kalka, and work is underway to prepare additional coaches for other trains. The trial run of these coaches has been successful, with the trains tested at speeds of 25 to 28 km/h on the narrow-gauge tracks.

Innovation in Train Safety: One of the significant improvements in the new vistadome coaches is the installation of the air-powered brake system, a first for this type of train on narrow-gauge tracks. This advanced braking system will ensure better speed control and safety, particularly during emergency situations, as it offers a more reliable stopping distance compared to the traditional vacuum brakes.
The Railway Ministry has given the green light for the operation of these new trains, and the Railway Board is now finalizing the fare structure.
