Shimla, December 26: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has passed away at the age of 92, following a sudden health deterioration on December 26, 2024. Singh was admitted to AIIMS, New Delhi, after losing consciousness at home, despite resuscitation efforts. He was declared dead later that evening.
Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, expressed his sorrow in an Instagram post, offering his condolences to Singh’s family. “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ji. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Thank you for your service to our nation. You will always be remembered for your economic revolution and the progressive changes you brought to the country,” Vadra wrote.
AIIMS Delhi released a statement confirming the demise, stating that Singh had been undergoing treatment for age-related medical conditions before his sudden health crisis. Despite medical intervention, the former Prime Minister passed away shortly after being brought to the emergency department.
Tributes from political leaders poured in, with veteran Congress leader Salman Khurshid taking to X (formerly Twitter) to express his grief: “Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India. His contributions to the nation and his dedication to public service will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Singh, renowned for his pivotal role in India’s economic reforms, rose to prominence as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao in the early 1990s. His policies, including liberalization and economic reforms, transformed the Indian economy. He later served as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, leaving behind a legacy of progressive policies and economic growth.
Singh’s career in public service spanned decades. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1991 until his retirement earlier this year. He was known for his calm demeanor, expertise in economics, and his ability to guide the country through complex economic challenges.
