Shimla, December 13: In a landmark move aimed at streamlining the ticketing system and promoting transparency in the transport sector, the Himachal Pradesh Transport Department has issued new orders to implement electronic ticketing machines (ETM) for all private stage carriage buses across the state. Following the success of the initiative in the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), private bus operators are now required to integrate electronic ticketing systems into their services.

A Step Towards Modernization

The Transport Department’s Director, DC Negi, confirmed on Wednesday that the new regulations would apply to all private bus operators. These operators will now be mandated to install ETMs in their vehicles within the next two months. The initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to modernize the transport infrastructure and bring more efficiency to the public transport system.

This digital transition is expected to offer a range of benefits for passengers, including more accurate fare calculations, faster transactions, and the convenience of receiving tickets through SMS, email, or mobile apps. The decision follows requests from private bus operators who sought guidance from the Transport Department to implement a system similar to that of HRTC buses.

Streamlined and Transparent Systems

The new system aims to enhance operational transparency and passenger convenience. With the introduction of ETMs, private buses will offer the same level of convenience as their HRTC counterparts. ETMs will allow passengers to receive electronic tickets, which will not only reduce the need for physical paper tickets but also make the entire ticketing process more efficient.

Importantly, the ETMs will be integrated with the existing fare collection system, ensuring a seamless experience for passengers while also facilitating accurate fare calculations. In addition to basic fare collection, the machines will allow for multiple modes of payment, including cashless payments, cards, and mobile wallets, making it easier for passengers to choose their preferred payment method.

Record-Keeping and Inspection Compliance

To ensure that the system runs smoothly and remains free from discrepancies, operators will be required to maintain detailed records of all transactions, fare collections, and ticket sales. These records will be subject to regular inspections by the Transport Department to ensure compliance with the new rules.

Furthermore, the ETMs will be equipped with GPS functionality and will be connected to the internet. This will enable authorities to monitor real-time data such as vehicle locations and transaction histories, ensuring both accountability and improved monitoring of the buses.

Benefits for Passengers and Operators

For passengers, the introduction of ETMs will significantly reduce the waiting time at ticket counters, as tickets will be issued instantly via SMS, email, or mobile apps. The convenience of cashless transactions will also encourage more people to use public transport, enhancing the overall user experience.

For private bus operators, the move towards electronic ticketing will reduce manual errors, improve transparency in fare collection, and minimize the risks of ticket-related fraud. By adopting technology, private bus operators can also tap into new revenue streams, such as providing passengers with detailed route information and transaction histories via the digital platforms.

A Future-Ready Transport System

This step is part of Himachal Pradesh’s broader vision to modernize its public transport sector, which includes enhancing services and ensuring passenger safety. With the success of HRTC’s introduction of ETMs, the state government hopes to create a uniform and future-ready transport system that aligns with the growing demand for digital solutions.

The initiative marks a significant stride toward making Himachal Pradesh’s transport sector more efficient, accountable, and customer-friendly. As private operators gear up to implement this change, the state is on track to offer passengers a modern, seamless, and hassle-free travel experience.
