Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – A relentless cold wave has taken over Himachal Pradesh following fresh snowfall in the high-altitude areas. On Monday night, temperatures dropped below freezing in seven out of the state’s twelve districts, leading to the freezing of water pipes, treacherous road conditions, and widespread discomfort.

The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at -12.7°C in Tabo, Lahaul-Spiti, while Kukumseri in the same district saw temperatures dip to -8.1°C. In other areas, including Kalpa (-5.4°C), Narkanda (3.4°C), and Manali (2.8°C), temperatures remained sharply below zero. The state capital, Shimla, saw a minimum of 1°C, while Nahan reported the highest minimum of 5.9°C.

Frozen Water Pipes and Dangerous Roads

The severe cold has caused widespread freezing of water pipes, leading to water shortages in various areas. The freezing temperatures have also made roads dangerously slippery, posing significant risks for travelers. Chamba-Killar via Sach Pass road has been closed due to heavy snow and freezing conditions, and travel along the Manali-Leh road has become increasingly hazardous.

Due to the extreme cold, the movement of buses has been severely impacted, particularly in rural areas. HRTC buses were unable to operate to Chitkul, Kuno Charang, and Asarang on Tuesday, and the Chanshal Pass remains closed, preventing access to Dodra Kwar.

Weather Forecast and Alerts

A yellow alert has been issued for dense fog from Wednesday to Friday, especially in the plain districts, while cold wave conditions are expected to continue in the other parts of the state. Though the weather is expected to remain clear in most areas on Wednesday, the ongoing cold wave is likely to persist, further exacerbating the discomfort for residents and travelers alike.

Light Snowfall in Kufri and Dodra Kwar

On Tuesday afternoon, light snowfall was observed in Kufri and Dodra Kwar areas of Shimla. These areas are already grappling with road closures due to snow accumulation, and the Dodra Kwar road has been completely shut for vehicular movement. The ongoing harsh conditions in the Kinnaur region have also resulted in continued road blockages, affecting local connectivity.

As Himachal Pradesh braces for more cold weather, authorities have advised residents and travelers to remain cautious, especially on the roads, and to ensure proper precautions against the freezing temperatures. The state’s infrastructure continues to be tested by the harsh winter, with the coming days expected to bring more challenges for the cold-hit region.
