Himachal Pradesh to Receive Much-Needed Rain and Snowfall as Western Disturbance Approaches
Western Disturbance Set to Bring Weather Relief
The weather system, which will become active over the western Himalayan region starting the night of December 7, is expected to extend into the adjoining plains of north-west India by December 8. This disturbance will usher in a period of light to moderate rain and snowfall across various parts of Himachal Pradesh, offering respite from the prolonged dry conditions.
According to the Meteorological Center in Shimla, the districts of Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kinnaur, Kangra, Shimla, and Kullu are expected to experience rain and snowfall. In the lower-altitude areas, such as Solan, Sirmaur, Una, Bilaspur, Mandi, and Hamirpur, light rain is anticipated.
Weather Temperatures Set to Drop
With the onset of the western disturbance, temperatures across Himachal Pradesh are expected to dip by 3-4°C, beginning from December 7. This drop in temperature will last for the next three days, adding a chill to the already cold conditions experienced in the state. However, the weather is forecast to clear up by December 10, signaling the end of this weather system.
Current Temperature Snapshot Across Himachal
As the western disturbance approaches, several regions of Himachal Pradesh are already experiencing chilly temperatures. Shimla recorded a minimum temperature of 8.0°C, while Sundernagar and Solan saw temperatures drop to 3.0°C and 2.0°C, respectively. In Kinnaur, Kalpa recorded a low of -0.8°C. Dharamsala reported 6.9°C, and Una stood at 3.6°C. In the higher-altitude regions, Kukumseri recorded a low of -6.5°C, Bharmour had 4.4°C, and Tabo, the coldest spot, recorded a chilling -10.6°C.
A Much-Needed Respite for the State
The upcoming weather system brings hope for the farmers and residents of Himachal Pradesh, who have been grappling with the adverse effects of the extended dry period. The expected rain and snowfall will not only provide relief from the drought but also contribute to improving the water levels in the region, which have been steadily declining.
As the region braces for the weather change, the upcoming spell of rain and snow is a timely reminder of the state’s vulnerability to fluctuating weather patterns and the importance of timely interventions in the face of such disruptions.
