JERUSALEM: The Israeli army said on Sunday that five soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon, bringing the death toll of soldiers fighting there to 37 since the ground operation began on September 30.

The army said in a statement that the soldiers were killed “during fighting in southern Lebanon”, adding that they were killed on Saturday.

Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel on October 8, 2023, in support of Hamas, after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on Israel the previous day.

Israel dramatically stepped up its air strikes on Lebanon late last month, before launching a ground operation in southern Lebanon.

At least 1,615 people have been killed in Lebanon’s war since September 23, according to an AFP count based on official figures, although the real toll is likely higher because of differences in data.
