ABUJA, Nigeria – At least 94 people were killed in northern Nigeria when a fuel tanker exploded near locals gathered to drain fuel, police told CNN.
The death toll is expected to rise from the blast in Majia, a village in Jigawa state, late Tuesday evening local time.
“The driver lost control and the tanker overturned and the fuel spilled into a drain,” Jigawa police spokesman Shiisu Lawan Adam said.
“As a result, residents rushed to drain fuel when the explosion occurred.”
At least 50 people were seriously injured, Adam said, adding that the death toll was provisional.
