Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus, Tata Sons, died at 86 on October 9.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the demise of Ratan Tata, “a visionary business leader, a kind soul and an extraordinary human being”. In a series of social media posts, PM Modi mentioned Ratan Tata’s contributions.
“He provided steady leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses. At the same time, his contributions went far beyond the boardroom. He endeared himself to many because of his humility, kindness and an unwavering commitment to improving our society,” PM Modi posted on Twitter (formerly Twitter).
“One of the most unique aspects of Shri Ratan Tata ji was his passion to dream big and help others. He was at the forefront of advancing issues such as education, healthcare, sanitation, animal welfare,” he said. Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of India’s largest conglomerate Tata Sons, died at the age of 86 after a prolonged illness. On Monday, he had dismissed speculation about his health and said he was undergoing medical check-ups due to his age and related medical conditions. “Thank you for thinking of me,” he said. Condolence messages have been pouring in after the news of Ratan Tata’s death. Chairman Draupadi Murmu said, “Ratan Tata combined corporate growth with nation-building and excellence with ethics.” “A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan, he took the Tata legacy forward and gave it a more impressive global presence. He inspired experienced professionals and young students alike. His contribution to philanthropy and charity is invaluable,” she said. Vice chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar mentioned Mr Tata’s contribution to the creation of a self-reliant India.
“A man of deep commitment and compassion, his philanthropic contributions and his humility accurately reflect the ethos he followed. Leaving behind a lasting legacy as a ‘stalment’ of Indian industry, India will miss him dearly.”
Speaking to news agency ANI, Union Minister Piyush Goyal recalled the good work of Ratan Tata. Recalling an incident related to the coronavirus pandemic, he said, “When the country was facing the Covid-19 pandemic, Ratan Tata pledged to give ₹1,500 crore without hesitation and condition. Out of this, ₹500 crore was released immediately. This helped us strengthen our hands to fight the battle against Covid.”
He recalled the day when Ratan Tata came to My Goyal’s house for breakfast and appreciated the simple south Indian breakfast comprising idli, vada and dosa with sambhar. Later, before leaving, Mr Tata asked Mr Goyal’s wife if she would like to take a selfie with him. Mr Goyal broke down and said, “It is these thoughtful gestures that make Ratan Tata the love of 140 crore Indians and the world.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered his condolences to the Tata Group and Ratan Tata’s “countless fans”. He shared a photo of himself shaking hands with Mr Tata and captioned it, “He selflessly devoted his life towards the development of our nation. Whenever I met him, his enthusiasm and commitment to the betterment of India and its people amazed me. His commitment to the welfare of our country and its people gave birth to millions of dreams.”
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari condoled the death of industrialist Ratan Tata, who was “a visionary and compassionate guide”, saying the country has lost a “proud son”. “For over three decades I had the privilege of having a deep personal and close familial relationship with him, where I witnessed his humility, simplicity and genuine respect for everyone, regardless of their status,” he said. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren still “can’t believe” that Ratan Tata is no more. A day of state mourning has been declared in Jharkhand as he described the industrialist as a man “who brought a backward state to global recognition”. Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar called Ratan Tata’s demise an “irreparable loss”. BJP leader Shaina NC said, “Ratan Tata was someone who worked not only for his close ones but for the entire society.” He added, “His only goal was to use his earnings to serve the society and make it better.” On Ratan Tata’s demise, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, “He is a legend by any yardstick and this legend will never die.” He said, “Ratan ji will not only be known as a major contributor to shaping the fabric of the modern Indian economy and development, but he will also live on as a legend.” Ratan Tata’s mortal remains have been kept at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) lawns in Mumbai’s Nariman Point for people to pay tribute to the philanthropist.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said Mr Tata’s last rites will be performed with full state honours. The national flag will fly at half-mast in government offices across the state and no entertainment or recreational programmes will be organised. The CM has announced a state mourning on Thursday (October 10).
