Beirut: More than a thousand people have been injured in simultaneous explosions of pagers targeting the US-designated terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran’s state media reported that its ambassador to Lebanon was also injured in the incident.

Hezbollah, which is banned by both the United States and the European Union, is the political and military establishment in Lebanon and is backed by Iran. Hezbollah supports Hamas, which has been at war with Israel in Gaza since October 2023.

Hezbollah has blamed Israel for the attack and claimed it is the “biggest security breach” ever.

Hezbollah has claimed that all the pagers exploded at almost the same time, an “Israeli breach” of its communications network.

The incident was the first such incident since Hezbollah began almost daily exchanges of fire with Israel in support of ally Hamas after the Palestinian militant group attacked Israel on October 7, triggering the Gaza war.

“Dozens of Hezbollah members have been injured in the south and southern suburbs of Beirut after pager explosions,” a source close to Hezbollah told news agency AFP, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency called it “an unprecedented enemy security incident” in which “handheld pager explosions” occurred at almost the same time across Lebanon.

According to AFP, Hezbollah communicates through its own telecommunications system and has asked its members to avoid using mobile phones since the Gaza war began nearly a year ago. The order was issued to avoid being intercepted by Israel’s technology.
