Shimla, September 05: On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla honoured 27 teachers with State Award and one teacher with National Award at a state level function organised at Raj Bhavan on Thursday. These awards were given for their remarkable contribution in the field of education for the year 2023. On this occasion, Lady Governor Janaki Shukla also presented plants to all the awarded teachers.
The birth anniversary of former President of India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan is celebrated as Teachers’ Day across the country. On this occasion, the Governor paid tribute to him and said that Dr. Radhakrishnan was an efficient administrator, hardworking politician, great teacher and a person of integrity. On this occasion, while congratulating the teachers honoured with the Teachers’ Award, the Governor said that the role of teachers, parents and students is important in the field of education. Teachers need to be sensitive towards all sections of the society so that the process of teaching and learning will be more effective. He said that there is a need to work with commitment to build a strong nation and this can be realized with the active participation of the youth.
The Governor said that the National Education Policy-2020 (NEP) also talks about the importance of teachers as nation builders. Many provisions have been made in this policy to increase the sense of respect towards teachers. He said that Himachal has always performed better in the field of education. He expressed hope that Himachal will do better in this direction in accordance with the reforms suggested in the National Education Policy.
Shukla said that the Government of India has also approved the ‘PM Shri’ scheme. Under this scheme, provision has been made to strengthen the already established schools and establish them as ‘PM School for Rising India’. He said that these schools will set an exemplary example for other schools by ensuring successful implementation of NEP. He said that 180 schools of the state will be developed under this scheme. The Government of India has selected Himachal from 6 states and brought it under the Star Project. Under this scheme, Himachal has been selected as a light house along with 3 states which will become a guide for other states.
Expressing satisfaction over the Ek Bharat-Shrestha Bharat initiative, he said that under this scheme, students and teachers are taken on educational tours to different states and for the first time the state government has also organized an international educational tour to enhance the knowledge of the teachers of the state. Expressing concern over the trend of drug addiction, the Governor said that at present many youths are trapped in the clutches of drugs which is a matter of concern for the bright future of the country. He said that there is a need to start a mass movement against drug abuse through which students of schools, colleges and other educational institutions will be made aware about the ill effects of drug abuse.
Teachers should play an important role in making students aware about the ill effects of drug abuse so that the youth can ensure their participation in the overall development of the society. He said that soon a strong awareness campaign will be started at the district level with the cooperation of the district administration, education department and panchayat representatives to spread awareness about the ill effects of drug abuse. On this occasion, the Governor also released a souvenir.
Education Minister Rohit Thakur welcomed the Governor and Lady Governor. He said that the state government is working with commitment for the development of the education sector. He said that the state government has taken many important decisions with the aim of improving the education sector. He said that a transparent policy has been adopted for teacher awards, which includes interview as well as evaluation so that only deserving teachers are awarded. He said that there is a need to give the right direction to the power of the youth and teachers can play an important role in this. He said that the first Chief Minister of the state Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar had given special importance to the education sector which was adopted by all the governments. He said that low enrollment of children in government schools is a matter of concern.
Chief Parliamentary Secretary Ashish Butail said that the Chief Minister has taken concrete steps towards improving the education sector. With the aim of benefiting the children, the state government is setting up Rajiv Gandhi Day-Boarding Schools in every assembly constituency. Earlier, the Education Minister felicitated the Governor and the Chief Parliamentary Secretary felicitated the Lady Governor. Education Secretary Rakesh Kanwar said that the teachers have done exemplary work in the field of education. Director Elementary Education Ashish Kohli presented the vote of thanks.
On this occasion, the girl students of Government Girls Senior Secondary School Portmore and Government Girls College presented cultural programs. Mayor of Shimla Municipal Corporation Surender Chauhan, Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, Secretary to Governor CP Verma, Director Higher Education Amarjeet Sharma, State Project Director of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan Rajesh Sharma and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
