Shimla, 07 August: Himachal Pradesh’s IT department has taken an innovative step forward in disaster management by procuring hi-tech drones equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. These advanced drones are set to play a vital role in providing quick relief to people affected by disasters, addressing the critical challenges posed by the difficult terrain of the region and the high costs associated with helicopter operations.
“These drones will prove to be highly effective in disaster relief efforts,” said Narendra Kumar, director, IT department. “They are equipped with capabilities such as data collection, GPS tracking, 3-D mapping and aerial survey monitoring, which are essential for taking safety measures and providing timely assistance.”
In disaster-prone areas, where vehicles cannot reach due to lack of roads and financial impracticality of helicopter operations, these drones will become a vital asset. The department plans to test these special drones soon, although specific locations for these tests are yet to be finalized. Remote areas in Shimla, Mandi, Kullu and Kinnaur districts are being considered as potential test sites.
“So far, drones capable of carrying up to 100 kg of weight have been developed, but their success depends a lot on geographical conditions,” Kumar said. “In our state, only drones with a load carrying capacity of less than 10 kg have been successful.” As a result, the IT department will initially procure drones that can carry up to 10 kg of weight to ensure reliable performance in the state’s challenging terrains.
One of the key challenges identified by the IT department is to safely transport these drones to the appropriate locations within the state. Despite this, the department is committed to enhancing disaster response capabilities. “Safely transporting the drones to the appropriate location in the state is a major challenge,” Kumar said, highlighting the logistical constraints involved.
The procurement of these advanced drones is a significant step towards improving disaster relief operations in Himachal Pradesh. The drones will enable rapid data collection and situation analysis, providing critical information to aid disaster management and response efforts. The upcoming trials will be a decisive factor in determining the operational feasibility and effectiveness of these drones in real-world disaster scenarios.
“Our goal is to provide immediate help to people affected by disasters,” Kumar stressed. “These drones will allow us to reach remote areas quickly and efficiently, ensuring timely assistance.”
As the state IT department moves forward with this initiative, the integration of advanced drone technology is expected to give a huge boost to disaster preparedness and response, ensuring that timely assistance reaches those in need even in the most remote areas. This proactive approach highlights the state’s commitment to leverage technology for better disaster management and relief efforts.
