New Delhi, 06 August: In a notable move to protect and maintain India’s ancient heritage, Rajya Sabha MP Indu Goswami has sought amendment in the rules of MPLADS funds. Speaking under special mention in Parliament today, Goswami highlighted the need to allow the use of MPLADS funds for the conservation and maintenance of 1,076 ancient temples protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Goswami pointed out that under the existing rules, MP funds cannot be used on projects related to religious faith. However, these rules allow the use of funds for the conservation and protection of heritage and archaeological monuments and buildings. She argued that this anomaly hinders conservation efforts of many historical temples that hold significant cultural and spiritual value.
National heritage and cultural significance
Goswami said, “There are 3,679 ASI sites across the country, out of which 1,076 temples are protected as national heritage under the Archaeological Survey of India.” Emphasizing on India’s rich cultural heritage, She said, “With a history of thousands of years, India is spreading the message of yoga, philosophy, spirituality and culture across the world. The new generation is increasingly realising the importance of connecting with its roots. In the field of culture and spirituality, the country is not only building modern infrastructure but also reviving ancient glory.”
Special appeal for temples of Himachal Pradesh
Goswami made a special mention of the temples of Devbhoomi Himachal Pradesh, known for their Nagar style architecture, which are under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Department. She highlighted the historical significance of the Shiva temple in his hometown Baijnath, a revered site for Shiva devotees from across the world. The temple is visited by millions of devotees every year, making its preservation important both culturally and spiritually.
Addressing minister Rao Indrajit Singh, Goswami urged the government to amend the MPLAD rules to bring ASI sites under its purview. “If this rule is amended, MPs will also be allowed to allocate funds from their MPLAD funds for the preservation and maintenance of these temples,” She said, underlining the importance of preserving India’s great heritage.
If this proposed amendment is enacted, it will be a significant step towards ensuring the protection and maintenance of India’s ancient temples, safeguarding them for future generations and developing a deeper connection with the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
