Shimla Municipal Corporation takes strict action against 6,000 defaulters who have not paid garbage collection bills: SMC will disconnect electricity and water supply connections
Shimla, July 29: The Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) has taken strict action against 6,000 defaulters who have not paid their garbage collection bills. The decisive action includes issuing notices to these defaulters, which include residential houses, restaurants and hotels.
Despite receiving monthly bills, these entities have not cleared their dues, which has prompted the SMC to take strict action. Municipal commissioner Bhupinder Atri said a comprehensive list of defaulters has been prepared, and notices are currently being issued to them.
Commissioner Atri warned, “If the defaulters fail to deposit the outstanding bills even after receiving notices, the municipal corporation will disconnect the electricity and water supply connections.”
The SMC is responsible for collecting garbage from around 60,000 households and business establishments, which includes about 40,000 domestic and 20,000 commercial consumers. The garbage collection process involves around 500 workers who work daily to ensure the cleanliness of the city.
Shimla has a growing problem of garbage, which has been aggravated by many residents and illegal guest houses dumping garbage in the forests. Areas like the forests below Aira Holmes and Strawberry Hills are filled with garbage and empty bottles. Despite various complaints and advisories, there has been no significant impact on the culprits. Littering is also visible on the Sanjauli-IGMC road and from Vikasnagar to New ISBT, where garbage is spread in the open.
SMC’s action against those not paying garbage collection bills in Shimla city is aimed at addressing this problem by enforcing strict compliance and encouraging responsible waste management practices among residents and businesses.
The move to cut off essential services like electricity and water supply is being seen as a last resort to force defaulters to pay their dues. The SMC’s strict measures underline the importance of regular bill payments to maintain essential municipal services.
