Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated the Agriculture Department of the state for being awarded the certificate of appreciation for its excellent work in the promotion of millets during the International Millets Year-2023.
Shimla, July 4: Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated the Agriculture Department of Himachal Pradesh Government for being awarded the Certificate of Appreciation for its excellent work in promotion of millets during the International Millets Year-2023. It is worth noting that the Agriculture Department of Himachal Pradesh Government has been awarded the Certificate of Appreciation by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.
CM Sukhu said that the present Himachal Pradesh Government is committed to the overall development of the agriculture sector and the Agriculture Department has taken many innovative steps to promote millets.
The CM said that this achievement demonstrates the commitment of the Himachal Pradesh Government. He said that the Himachal Pradesh Government, along with making people aware about the nutritional and health benefits of millets, also encouraged the production of millets on a large scale in the state.
A spokesperson of the Agriculture Department of Himachal Pradesh said in the capital Shimla today that the year-2023 was designated as the International Year of Millets to make people aware of the benefits of millets in terms of nutrition, health, environmental sustainability and economic development. He said that the global food system is facing challenges like hunger, malnutrition, increasing population, limited natural resources and climate change. The solution to these challenges can be found in the form of millets which are rich in diverse nutrients and can be grown in various adverse climates with minimal resources.
He said that understanding the importance of this initiative, the Agriculture Department of Himachal Pradesh organized various activities across the state to increase awareness and encourage farmers towards millet cultivation.
These activities included millet-based camps, fairs, festivals and exhibitions aimed at making farmers aware and encouraging them.
He said that the Agriculture Department motivated the farmers to produce market surplus by linking them with the necessary technical inputs and market so that they keep adopting millet cultivation.

He said that under the new initiatives, seed and mini kit distribution, training programmes for farmers, sale of millets at farm gates, and millets food festivals etc. were organized. Informative literature and recipe booklets were also distributed to increase awareness about millets cultivation and their products. He said that 983 metric tonnes of millets were produced in 1,526 hectares of area in all the districts of the state.
He said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare made extensive efforts to promote millets and to generate awareness about the nutritional value of the nutritious cereal and its economic and ecological benefits.
Agriculture Minister Prof. Chander Kumar appreciated the dedication of the farmers for furthering the efforts of millets cultivation. He said that in future also, the Himachal Pradesh Government would ensure implementation of schemes to promote millets.
Agriculture Secretary C. Paulrasu and Agriculture Director Kumad Singh urged the farmers to continue this effort and increase the millets production with special focus on Bajra, Ragi, Kodo millet, Kangni, Ragi, Mandua, Sanwa.
