Famous by the title, “The Hitman”, Rohit Sharma is one of the best cricketers in India. He is presently the captain of the Indian team in International Cricket. He is also the captain of the Mumbai Indian Team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under his captaincy, Mumbai Indians have won the title five times in the tournament. He is one of the best openers of all time. He is known for his aggressive play, timing, elegant style, and six-hitting abilities. He is one of the best cricketers in the world in today’s world. Along with being a cricketer, he is also an animal worker. He works with various animal organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. He helped in creating awareness about various animal-related issues. He is a married man and also the father of one daughter.  

CHILDHOOD

Rohit Gurunath Sharma better known as Rohit Sharma was born on 30th April 1987 in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra. He is the son of Purnima Sharma, mother, and Gurunath Sharma, father. His mother, Purnima Sharma is from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and his father, Gurunath Sharma from Maharashtra. Rohit Sharma’s father worked as a caretaker at a transport firm. Rohit Sharma has a younger brother named Vishal Sharma.

Rohit Sharma in his childhood days lived with his grandparents and uncles due to the low economic condition of his father. He used to live in Borivili with his grandparents. He used to weekly visit his parents. 

Rohit Sharma was a talented kid. He loved to play cricket. Seeing his love for cricket his uncle helped him to join Cricket camp in 1999. There he met with his coach, Dineh Lab. Impressed by Rohit Sharma’s ability and talent he suggested he join a better school with good cricket facilities. Rohit Sharma told him about his inability to afford it. His coach, Dinesh Lad, got Rohit Sharma a scholarship from Swami Vivekananda International school. Rohit Sharma did not have to pay fees for four years. He trained under Dinesh Lad in school. 

Rohit Sharma started as a right-handed off-spinner. But as soon as his coach noticed his batting ability, he promoted him to opener from eighth position. On his debut as the opener, Rohit Sharma made a century. He played excellently in matches as a batsman. 

CAREER

Rohit Sharma made his debut for List A for West Zone against Central Zone, for Deodha Trophy Tournament at Gwalior, in March 2005. He scored 31 runs, not out at the eighth position. West Zone won that match by 3 wickets, with 24 balls remaining. Rohit Sharma gained in limelight during this tournament, against North Zone in Udaipur. He scored 142 in 123. He visited Abu Dhabi and Australia with India A squad. He was also included in the top 30 members eligible for the upcoming ICC Champion Trophy tournament. But was not selected. 

Rohit Sharma made his first-class debut for India against New Zealand at Darwin, in July 2006. India won the match by 3 wickets, in which Rohit Sharma made 57 out of 22. He made his Rajni Trophy debut for Mumbai in 2006-07 against Gujrat. He scored 205 off 207. Mumbai won the trophy against Bengal in his second innings, he made haft century (57) not out. 

Rohit Sharma made his International Test debut in November 2013 against West Indies, at Eden Garden. This test was the farewell of Sachin Tendulkar. He scored 177 runs, second highest to Dhawan (187). In his second test, he made 111 runs not out at Wankhede in Mumbai. Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut on 23 June 2007, against Ireland. He is to date considered one of the best openers. 

PERSONAL LIFE

On 13th December 2015, Rohit Sharma married his long-time girlfriend, Ritika Sajdeh. He became a father to a girl child on 30th December 2018. 

ACHIEVEMENTS 

  • Holds the world record for the highest individual score by a batsman playing in a one-day international match, scoring 264 against Sri Lanka on 13th November 2014 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. 
  • Holds the record of scoring three double centuries in a one-day international form of cricket. 
  • Holds the record of the only person scoring five centuries in a single edition of the Cricket World Cup, 2019. 
  • Holds the record as the 1st batsman to score two centuries as the opener, on 5th October 2019.
