Shimla, August 11: The Himachal Pradesh government has announced the closure and merger of 560 government schools across the state from September. Under the process, students of these schools will be shifted to nearby educational institutions only after the appointment of 750 additional teachers in the new schools. The move is part of the government’s effort to make maximum use of resources and improve educational outcomes in the state.

Out of the 560 schools, 108 schools with zero enrollment will be closed completely, while 452 schools with five or less students will be merged with nearby schools. The Directorate of Elementary Education has directed the District Deputy Directors to submit the list of teachers for reappointment within 10 days. Once this list is finalized, the students will be shifted to schools located within a radius of two to three kilometers of their current institutions.

For August, studies will continue as normal in the affected schools. Additional teachers from the closed and merged schools will be deployed in institutions that have been designated as Schools of Excellence. The list of teachers for these re-appointments is expected to be finalized this month, pending approval from education secretary Rakesh Kanwar. The final authority on their deployment will remain with the education secretary to prevent teachers from being arbitrarily posted in nearby schools.

Director of primary education Ashish Kohli has confirmed that the process of transferring non-teaching staff, including water carriers, multi-task workers and other class IV employees, has already begun. Preparation of lists for both teachers and non-teachers will begin next week. The aim is to fully implement the government’s decision by September to ensure that all affected students can be transferred to other schools smoothly. The reorganization of schools is part of the state’s comprehensive strategy to streamline educational resources and enhance the quality of education in Himachal Pradesh.
