In a major push to strengthen the education system, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed all CBSE-pattern government schools in Himachal Pradesh to introduce medical, non-medical, and commerce streams, following a remarkable surge in student enrolment.

The decision comes shortly after the state government implemented the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum in 151 government schools from the current academic session. The move has sparked renewed trust among parents and students, many of whom are now shifting from private institutions to government schools.

Officials say this shift reflects a growing belief that government schools are no longer a second option—but a reliable choice for quality education.

Enrollment Boom Across Districts

Several schools across the state have witnessed a dramatic rise in admissions:

  • Killar (Chamba): 90.24% increase
  • Janjehli (Mandi): 90.43% increase
  • Reckong Peo (Kinnaur): 50.50% increase
  • Nerwa (Shimla): 52.22% increase
  • Ghanahatti: 26.27% increase
  • Kaza (Lahaul-Spiti): 23.40% increase
  • Theog: 16.19% increase
  • Noradhar (Sirmaur): 29.69% increase
  • Chopal (Shimla): 28.16% increase

This sharp rise highlights a significant shift in public perception, especially in rural and remote regions.

Focus on Quality and Accessibility

The Chief Minister has instructed the Education Department to ensure that infrastructure, qualified teachers, and subject availability are put in place within a strict timeline. The goal is not just expansion—but delivering consistent, high-quality education across all regions.

Sukhu emphasized that his government is committed to bridging the gap between urban and rural education standards.

Himachal’s Rising Education Rankings

Under recent reforms, Himachal Pradesh has made notable progress in national education rankings—jumping from 21st position in 2021 to among the top five states in quality education.

The state has also achieved full literacy, a milestone that further strengthens its reputation as an emerging education leader in India.
