Pope Leo XIV has welcomed the recently announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran, calling it a “sign of deep hope” during a time of rising global tensions.

Addressing a large gathering at St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday, the pontiff expressed relief over the de-escalation. According to Vatican sources, he said the development was received “with satisfaction” and reflected a hopeful step toward peace.

However, the Pope’s remarks came shortly after he strongly condemned earlier threats made by Donald Trump, who had warned of severe consequences for Iran. Reacting to those statements, the Pope described such rhetoric as “truly unacceptable,” especially when it puts an entire population at risk.

“Beyond international law, this is a moral issue concerning the well-being of people,” the Pope emphasized, highlighting the humanitarian impact of geopolitical conflicts.

Ceasefire Announcement and Key Developments

The diplomatic breakthrough came after President Trump announced a temporary halt to military action against Iran. The two nations have agreed to a two-week bilateral ceasefire, opening the door for further negotiations.

In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump revealed that the decision followed discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir. He noted that Pakistan played a crucial mediating role in easing tensions.

Trump also stated that a 10-point proposal from Iran appears “workable” and could serve as the foundation for a long-term peace agreement in the Middle East. However, he added that the ceasefire depends on ensuring the safe and immediate reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Iran Responds Positively

Iran responded swiftly to the peace proposal. Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Iran would pause its defensive military operations, provided that attacks from the US are halted.

The decision, he said, was taken under the guidance of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and reflects a willingness to move toward diplomatic resolution.

Next Step: High-Level Talks in Islamabad

Following the ceasefire agreement, formal talks are now scheduled to take place in Islamabad this Friday. The Iranian delegation will be led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, while the US team will be headed by Vice President JD Vance.

Global Hope Amid Tensions

The Pope’s message has added a moral dimension to the ongoing geopolitical situation, reinforcing the importance of peace over conflict. As the world watches closely, the temporary truce is being seen as a critical opportunity to prevent further escalation in the region.

While challenges remain, the ceasefire has sparked cautious optimism that diplomacy may finally prevail over confrontation.
