As tensions begin to simmer along the Himachal-Punjab border, the issue of revised entry tax on vehicles has quickly turned into a matter of public concern and political debate. What started as a policy adjustment is now raising questions about convenience, interstate relations, and the daily struggles of commuters and transporters.

Inside the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha on Monday, the atmosphere reflected this growing unease. Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur flagged the issue, warning that protests have already begun in Punjab’s border areas ahead of the new tax rates coming into effect from April 1. He expressed concern that the situation could escalate, affecting not just governance but also the smooth movement of people between the two states.

Thakur also pointed out that the matter has already drawn attention from Punjab’s leadership, hinting at possible strain in interstate relations. For everyday travelers, especially Himachalis visiting Punjab, there is a growing fear of inconvenience or even harassment at border checkpoints.

Adding to the pressure are voices from the ground—taxi operators and tourism stakeholders—who feel the pinch of increased levies, particularly on vehicles registered outside Himachal. With tourism being a key economic driver, even a small disruption could have wider ripple effects.

Responding to the concerns, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stepped in with reassurance. He clarified that this is not a new tax, but a revision of an existing entry tax that has been in place for nearly 30 years. According to him, the changes are largely due to the integration of the tax system with FASTag on national highways—an attempt to modernize collection rather than burden citizens.

Importantly, Sukhu emphasized that the impact on small vehicle owners would be minimal. The noticeable increase applies mainly to heavy vehicles, where the tax rises modestly from ₹130 to ₹170. Still, acknowledging public concern, he assured that the government is already working on rationalising the rates.

In a move aimed at easing local hardship, the Chief Minister announced relief measures for residents living within a 5-kilometre radius of entry points. A special pass system will be introduced, allowing them smoother and more affordable travel across the border.

However, the urgency of the situation was further highlighted by BJP MLA Randhir Sharma, who noted that contractors have already been deployed and preparations for tax collection are complete. With implementation set to begin from midnight of March 31, any last-minute changes could create confusion on the ground.

More concerning is the growing unrest across the border. Reports suggest that protests in Punjab are intensifying, with some groups even threatening to block key border routes. If not handled carefully, this could quickly turn into a law-and-order challenge.

Sharma urged the government to act swiftly—consulting contractors, stakeholders, and neighboring authorities—to find a balanced solution before the situation spirals further.

For now, all eyes remain on how quickly the Himachal government moves from assurance to action. As travelers, businesses, and local residents wait for clarity, one thing is certain: what happens next will directly impact not just border movement, but also the trust between two neighboring states.
