Tensions in the Middle East have taken a troubling turn, as France has urgently called for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council following deadly attacks on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon.

On Monday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot strongly reacted to a series of incidents targeting personnel of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Calling the situation “extremely serious,” he pushed for immediate global attention and accountability.

Deadly Attacks Raise Global Concern

The situation escalated after a tragic attack on Sunday claimed the life of an Indonesian peacekeeper and left three others injured. Just a day later, another explosion killed two more Indonesian soldiers and wounded two others.

These back-to-back incidents have shocked the international community and raised serious questions about the safety of UN personnel deployed in conflict zones.

Barrot didn’t hold back, calling the attacks near UN positions “completely unacceptable and unjustifiable.” He also expressed heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and showed solidarity with Indonesia during this difficult time.

France Condemns Violations Against Its Troops

France also reported separate incidents involving its own UNIFIL troops stationed in Naqoura. According to Barrot, there were acts of intimidation by the Israel Defense Forces, despite proper coordination protocols being followed.

Describing these actions as serious violations, France has formally raised its concerns with the Israeli Ambassador in Paris, signaling rising diplomatic tension.

What UNIFIL Has Said So Far

According to UNIFIL, one peacekeeper was killed and another critically injured when a projectile hit a UN position near Adchit Al Qusayr in southern Lebanon. The origin of the attack is still unknown, and an investigation is currently underway.

In its official statement, UNIFIL highlighted the growing human cost of the ongoing conflict and stressed that violence is not the solution.

“Too many lives have been lost on both sides… There is no military solution. The violence must end.”

Why This Matters

This development is not just another regional conflict update—it’s a serious escalation involving international peacekeeping forces. Any attack on UN personnel is considered a grave violation under international law.

France’s push for an emergency UNSC meeting indicates that global powers may soon step in to prevent further escalation. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether diplomacy can de-escalate the situation or if tensions will continue to rise.
