Himcare Row Escalates: ‘Male Ovarian Surgery’ Claim Triggers Political Storm in Himachal Pradesh
The political heat in Himachal Pradesh is rising — and this time, it’s over a claim that has left many both confused and concerned.
The political heat in Himachal Pradesh is rising — and this time, it’s over a claim that has left many both confused and concerned.
A fresh controversy has erupted around the Himcare health scheme after Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu alleged that bills were generated for “male ovarian surgery,” hinting at possible irregularities. The statement quickly triggered a strong backlash from BJP leaders, who called the claim misleading and embarrassing.
⚠️ What’s the Real Issue?
According to BJP legislators, the claim may stem from a misunderstanding rather than an actual scam. During a heated discussion in the Assembly, they clarified that certain medical packages used in cancer treatments may include terms like “ovary,” even when applied to male patients.
Their explanation?
These are not surgeries but part of chemotherapy protocols where drug packages are standardized, regardless of gender-specific terminology.
🏥 Doctors Step In With Clarity
Dr. Janak Raj, a neurosurgeon and BJP MLA, explained that doctors often adjust treatment packages to ensure patients receive timely care — especially when their condition doesn’t perfectly match predefined categories.
In one such case, a cancer patient reportedly received treatment through a modified package. According to doctors, this kind of flexibility is meant to help patients, not exploit the system.
“Helping a helpless patient cannot be labeled as corruption,” he emphasized.
💸 Bigger Concerns Over Healthcare Spending
While the controversy grabbed headlines, BJP leaders also raised deeper concerns about the state’s healthcare priorities.
One major question:
Why is the government investing heavily in expensive robotic surgery systems?
These machines reportedly cost around ₹28 crore each, with high maintenance expenses — and notably, such procedures are not covered under Himcare or Ayushman Bharat schemes.
Former Health Minister Vipin Parmar questioned whether such investments make sense when many hospitals still lack basic facilities like doctors, technicians, and essential equipment.
📉 Budget Cuts & Ground Reality
Adding to the criticism, opposition leaders pointed out that the state’s health budget has reportedly decreased by over ₹1,000 crore compared to last year.
They argue this reflects a mismatch between big-ticket announcements and on-ground realities, where many hospitals continue to struggle with shortages.
🗣️ CM Sukhu Hits Back
Responding to the allegations, CM Sukhu defended his government, stating that the previous administration had left the healthcare system in poor condition.
He highlighted steps taken by his government, including:
- Strengthening medical colleges
- Expanding staff recruitment
- Making the super-specialty hospital in Chamyana operational
According to him, these efforts mark a “revolutionary change” in the state’s healthcare system.
