Anurag Thakur Slams Himachal Pradesh Govt Over ‘Planned’ Fuel Cess, Warns of Rising Burden on Common People
Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur has launched a strong political attack on the Congress-led government in Himachal Pradesh, alleging that it is quietly preparing to impose an additional cess on petrol and diesel — a move he says will hit ordinary citizens the hardest.
Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur has launched a strong political attack on the Congress-led government in Himachal Pradesh, alleging that it is quietly preparing to impose an additional cess on petrol and diesel — a move he says will hit ordinary citizens the hardest.
In a sharply worded statement, Thakur accused the government of going back on its promises. “What was projected as relief for the people is slowly turning into economic pressure,” he said, hinting that the state’s financial decisions are drifting away from public welfare.
His remarks came in response to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who recently clarified that no such cess has been implemented yet. However, Thakur remained unconvinced.
“The moment such an idea enters policy thinking, it shows clear intent. The BJP will strongly oppose any move that puts even an extra rupee burden on the people,” he asserted.
🚨 Who Will Really Pay?
The government has reportedly indicated that the proposed cess may target traders. But Thakur dismissed this claim, arguing that fuel price hikes have a ripple effect across the economy.
According to him, the real burden would eventually be borne by:
- Farmers
- Transporters
- Taxi drivers
- Small shopkeepers
- Everyday consumers
“When fuel prices rise, everything becomes expensive — from transportation to daily essentials. It’s the common man who ultimately pays,” he added.
📉 Concerns Over State Finances
Thakur also raised serious concerns about the financial health of the state. He claimed that Himachal Pradesh’s debt has crossed ₹1 lakh crore under the current government, questioning its fiscal management.
Taking a direct swipe at the Chief Minister, he remarked that if financial management is becoming a challenge, the finance portfolio should be handled by someone more capable.
