The Himachal Pradesh Budget debate turned heated as sharp exchanges between the ruling government and the Opposition dominated the Assembly session, reflecting deep political divides over the state’s financial direction.

Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur launched a strong attack on the government, calling the Budget “hollow” and disconnected from the real needs of the people. According to him, several schemes announced in the last three years exist only on paper due to a lack of proper funding.

He also highlighted a rare contraction in the state Budget compared to last year, raising concerns over reduced allocations in key sectors. Thakur questioned the government’s fiscal management, pointing out a steady rise in revenue deficit and a noticeable decline in capital expenditure — a critical component for infrastructure and development.

On the employment front, Thakur presented figures to argue that government jobs have significantly decreased under the current administration. He contrasted this with his own tenure, stating that despite challenges like COVID-19, government employment saw a substantial increase.

He further pushed back against the state government’s criticism of the Centre, emphasizing that central assistance continues to play a major role in Himachal’s finances. Calling the Budget a “bundle of false promises,” he accused the government of misleading the public and alleged that development efforts are uneven, benefiting select constituencies.

Responding firmly, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu rejected these claims, stating that the figures cited by the Opposition were inaccurate. He reassured that the state’s financial condition is stable and improving.

“Our policies are designed to make Himachal Pradesh self-reliant by 2027 and one of the most prosperous states by 2032,” Sukhu said, outlining a long-term vision for growth and sustainability.

Adding to the debate, Congress MLA Bhawani Singh Pathania criticized the previous BJP government, questioning how massive financial support from the Centre was utilized. He pointed out that despite receiving substantial grants and GST compensation, the earlier government failed to deliver proportional development outcomes.

Pathania argued that the current administration is dealing with inherited challenges but has still managed to improve essential sectors like healthcare and education.
