In a move that has sparked conversations across offices and social media alike, the Himachal Pradesh government has rolled out a strict dress code for its employees—bringing an end to casual outfits like jeans and T-shirts in official spaces.
The new directive makes it clear: government offices are meant to reflect professionalism, discipline, and decorum.
What’s Changing?
According to official instructions issued by Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta, all government employees must now dress in formal, clean, and modest attire in sober colours. The aim is simple—maintain the dignity of public service.
For men, this means shirts paired with trousers or pants, along with proper footwear like shoes or sandals. Women employees are expected to wear sarees, salwar suits, churidars, or formal western wear that aligns with professional standards.
Why Now?
Interestingly, this isn’t a completely new rule. The government had introduced similar guidelines back in 2017. However, over time, many employees drifted towards casual dressing, prompting authorities to reinforce the policy.
Officials say the decision is not just about appearance—it’s about creating a workplace culture that reflects seriousness, responsibility, and respect for the public.
Not Just Clothes: Social Media Rules Tightened Too
Along with dress code changes, the government has also tightened its stance on social media behavior.
Employees have been clearly instructed not to express personal opinions on government policies or schemes online. They are also barred from making political or religious statements in public forums, including vlogs and social platforms.
The reasoning? To maintain neutrality and uphold the integrity of government service.
What Happens If Rules Are Broken?
The government has warned that any violation—whether related to dress code or social media conduct—could lead to disciplinary action.
Employees have been asked to follow these rules “in letter and spirit,” signaling that enforcement this time may be stricter than before.
Mixed Reactions from Employees
While many employee representatives have welcomed the move, calling it a step towards maintaining professionalism, there are also concerns.
Some believe that sustaining strict dress codes over time could be challenging. Others are cautiously supportive of the social media restrictions—as long as they don’t infringe on personal freedom of expression.
The Bigger Picture
At its core, this decision reflects a broader push by governments to bring back formality and discipline in public offices—something that many feel has faded in recent years.
Whether this move sets a trend for other states remains to be seen. But for now, one thing is certain: in Himachal Pradesh government offices, casual is officially out, and formal is back in.
