BJP Targets Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Over ‘Misleading’ Budget Claims, Files Privilege Notice

The political heat in Himachal Pradesh is rising fast, and this time, it’s not just another debate inside the Assembly—it’s a direct challenge to the Chief Minister himself.
On Wednesday, the BJP took a strong step by filing a privilege notice against Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, accusing him of presenting “misleading” information during his budget speeches over the past three years.
More than 20 BJP MLAs signed the notice, which was submitted to Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania just before the second phase of the budget session began. The move has added a fresh layer of tension to an already charged political atmosphere.
⚖️ What Is the Allegation?
According to BJP leaders, the Chief Minister made several announcements in previous budgets that were either incomplete, exaggerated, or not implemented as promised. They argue that this could amount to a breach of privilege—something taken very seriously in legislative proceedings.
The notice has been filed under Rule 75, which deals with cases where a member is believed to have misled the House or shown contempt toward it.
The opposition has also requested that the matter be sent to the Privileges Committee for a detailed investigation and that all related documents be presented before the Assembly.
📊 Key Promises Under Question
The BJP has pointed out 11 specific instances from budget speeches between 2023 and 2026. Some of the major issues raised include:
The ambitious plan to make Himachal a Green Energy State by 2026
Replacement of 1,500 diesel buses with electric ones
Introduction of an EV subsidy policy
Launch of a Green Hydrogen Policy
A 1,311 crore Tourism Mega Plan
The 680 crore Rajiv Gandhi Start-Up Yojana
Apart from infrastructure and policy announcements, the opposition has also questioned welfare promises such as:
1,500 monthly assistance for women
Expansion of natural farming
Creation of 2,500 agriculture clusters
Increase in milk MSP
Filling up of government vacancies
According to BJP leaders, these announcements created expectations among the public but have not been executed in the way they were presented.
🔥 Political Tensions Likely to Rise
While heated arguments between the ruling Congress government and BJP leaders—especially Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur—have been common, this is the first time a formal privilege notice has been moved against a sitting Chief Minister in the state.
Now that the matter is in the Speaker’s hands, all eyes are on what happens next. If admitted, the issue could escalate into a full-scale political confrontation, potentially disrupting Assembly proceedings in the coming days.
