The 98th Academy Awards delivered a memorable night in Hollywood as Michael B. Jordan and Jessie Buckley claimed the biggest acting honors of the evening.

Jordan won the Best Actor Oscar for his powerful performance in “Sinners,” while Buckley earned Best Actress for her emotional role in “Hamnet.” The ceremony celebrated outstanding performances and films that captivated audiences worldwide.

Michael B. Jordan’s Long Journey to Oscar Glory

After more than two decades in the film industry, Michael B. Jordan finally achieved Oscar success with his role in the supernatural horror drama Sinners.

In the film, Jordan plays identical twins Smoke and Stack, characters set against the haunting backdrop of 1930s Mississippi. His layered performance impressed critics and audiences alike, helping the film earn a record 16 Academy Award nominations.

With this win, Jordan becomes the sixth Black actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, joining an elite group of legendary performers.

Jordan, now 39, was born in Santa Ana, California, and raised in Newark, New Jersey. Beyond acting, he has also built a strong reputation as a producer and director. Many fans also remember when he was named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2020.

Jessie Buckley Wins First Oscar for Emotional Role in Hamnet

Irish actress Jessie Buckley delivered one of the most moving performances of the year in Hamnet, earning her the Best Actress Oscar.

Buckley portrayed Agnes, the wife of William Shakespeare, in the emotional drama directed by Chloe Zhao. The performance resonated deeply with audiences, many describing it as heartbreaking and unforgettable.

Her victory was widely expected. Buckley had already dominated the awards season, winning major honors at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards, and Actors Awards.

This marks her first Academy Award, making her the first Irish performer to win Best Actress.

Tough Competition in the Acting Categories

The Best Actor race featured a strong lineup including:

  • Timothée Chalamet – Marty Supreme
  • Leonardo DiCaprio – One Battle After Another
  • Ethan Hawke – Blue Moon
  • Wagner Moura – The Secret Agent

Meanwhile, Buckley competed against:

  • Rose Byrne – If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
  • Renate Reinsve – Sentimental Value
  • Emma Stone – Bugonia
  • Kate Hudson – Song Sung Blue

Best Picture Goes to One Battle After Another

The biggest award of the night, Best Picture, went to Paul Thomas Anderson’s political saga One Battle After Another.

The film tells a sweeping multi-generational story about political resistance in America. Despite a celebrated career, Anderson had never previously won an Oscar, making the victory especially meaningful.

A Big Night for Warner Bros

The 2026 Oscars turned into a major victory for Warner Bros, the studio behind both One Battle After Another and Sinners.

The celebration came during a complicated moment for the studio. Just weeks earlier, Warner Bros had agreed to a major sale to Paramount Skydance, a deal that could reshape the entertainment industry and potentially lead to changes across Hollywood.
