A sudden spell of snowfall in the higher reaches of Manali on Sunday evening caused major traffic disruption near the south portal of the Atal Tunnel Rohtang, leaving nearly 1,000 vehicles stranded on the route.

Tourists and commuters traveling through the region found themselves stuck for hours as slippery roads and poor visibility made driving extremely difficult.

Police Launch Rescue Operation

As the situation developed, a police team from Manali quickly reached the location and began a rescue operation. Officers started guiding stranded vehicles back toward Manali to ensure the safety of travelers.

The operation continued late into the evening as authorities worked to clear the congestion and prevent accidents on the snow-covered road.

BRO and Rescue Teams Asked to Assist

Officials also requested assistance from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and other rescue agencies. Teams were asked to help prevent vehicles from sliding by spraying mud on icy road sections, which improves tire grip in snowy conditions.

Authorities said the coordinated effort was necessary to manage the large number of vehicles stuck near the tunnel.

Tourists Asked to Stay Calm

Police appealed to stranded travelers to remain patient while the rescue operation continued.

According to officials, all passengers were safe, and teams were working steadily to move vehicles out of the affected stretch.

Weather Conditions Worsen Visibility

Meanwhile, dark clouds covered the sky across Manali, further reducing visibility in the region. Light snowfall was reported in the upper hills, including areas surrounding the Atal Tunnel.

The sudden change in weather created hazardous driving conditions, leading to the traffic standstill.

Authorities Monitoring the Situation

Officials said that road conditions are being closely monitored and additional measures may be taken if snowfall intensifies. Travelers heading toward high-altitude areas around Manali have been advised to drive cautiously and follow official updates.
