Shimla Turns Into Political Safe Zone as Haryana Congress MLAs Camp Ahead of Rajya Sabha Elections
As political tension rises ahead of the March 16 Rajya Sabha elections in Haryana, the hill capital of Shimla has unexpectedly turned into the center of high-stakes political activity.
As political tension rises ahead of the March 16 Rajya Sabha elections in Haryana, the hill capital of Shimla has unexpectedly turned into the center of high-stakes political activity.
In a strategic move to prevent possible cross-voting, the Congress party has relocated several of its legislators to Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. By Friday evening, a convoy of vehicles carrying Congress leaders and MLAs from Haryana arrived in the hill city via Solan, drawing significant political attention.
Over 30 Congress Leaders Reach Shimla
According to reports, around 31 Congress MLAs along with a few MPs from Haryana have reached Shimla. However, the exact location where they will be staying has not been officially disclosed.
Political sources suggest that the legislators may be accommodated in a hotel in Kufri or nearby areas, away from public movement. The idea is to keep all MLAs together in a controlled environment until the Rajya Sabha voting takes place.
Why the Rajya Sabha Numbers Matter
The upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Haryana are shaping up to be politically interesting. Two seats are up for election, but three candidates are in the fray, making the contest tighter than usual.
In Rajya Sabha elections, MLAs vote to elect members, which means the strength of each party in the legislative assembly directly affects the result.
According to the current numbers:
- BJP has 48 MLAs
- Three independent MLAs are reportedly supporting the BJP
To win both Rajya Sabha seats, the BJP would need 62 votes. While the party is expected to comfortably secure one seat, winning the second would require additional votes from outside its current support base.
This arithmetic has sparked speculation that attempts could be made to influence MLAs from other camps.
Congress Adopts ‘Resort Politics’ Strategy
To avoid any unexpected political surprises, the Congress leadership has opted for a strategy often described as “resort politics.”
Under this approach, MLAs are kept together at a secure location to reduce the chances of political pressure, persuasion, or cross-voting.
Party leaders fear that even a few cross-votes could dramatically change the outcome of the Rajya Sabha election. By bringing legislators to Shimla—where Congress currently holds power in Himachal Pradesh—the party hopes to keep its flock intact until voting day.
Memories of the Last Political Upset
The move also reflects lessons learned from a political episode two years ago in Himachal Pradesh.
During the Rajya Sabha elections at that time, six Congress MLAs cross-voted, and three independent legislators supported the BJP, leading to a surprising defeat for the Congress despite having the numbers.
Following the rebellion, the dissident MLAs were reportedly moved to Panchkula in Haryana and later to Uttarakhand, both states governed by the BJP.
Shimla Once Again at the Center of Political Drama
Now, history appears to be echoing once again.
With just days left before voting, Shimla has quietly transformed into a temporary political headquarters for Haryana’s Congress leadership. What is normally a peaceful hill destination has suddenly become the backdrop of a strategic political battle unfolding ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections.
As the countdown to March 16 begins, all eyes will remain on whether the Congress can keep its legislators united—or whether the political arithmetic will change once again.
