In a major development for one of India’s most popular adventure tourism destinations, the Himachal Pradesh government has granted Nagar Panchayat status to Bir-Billing, the globally renowned paragliding site. The move has been widely welcomed by local residents and public representatives.

Rajya Sabha MP Anurag Sharma expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, saying the decision would open new doors for infrastructure development and better civic facilities in the region.

According to Sharma, Bir has witnessed rapid growth over the past few years, largely driven by tourism and adventure sports. Granting the area Nagar Panchayat status will help authorities implement planned urban development and provide improved civic amenities to the growing population.

“This decision will prove to be a milestone for the development of the Bir region,” Sharma said, adding that the move would allow the government to strengthen essential services and infrastructure.

The newly formed civic body is expected to benefit residents of Bir, Gunehar, Chougan, and Kyori villages. With the Nagar Panchayat in place, local authorities will now be able to manage facilities such as road maintenance, sanitation, drinking water supply, street lighting, and scientific waste management in a more organised and efficient manner.

Bir is internationally known for its paragliding and adventure tourism, attracting thousands of visitors from India and abroad every year. Improved civic infrastructure, Sharma said, will not only enhance the quality of life for residents but also strengthen the region’s tourism potential.

He further noted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhu, the state government has been focusing on balanced and inclusive development across Himachal Pradesh. Granting civic status to Bir, he added, fulfils a long-pending demand of local residents.

For years, people from Bir and nearby villages had been urging the government to establish a local civic body to manage the growing needs of the area. With the approval of the Nagar Panchayat, many residents believe their aspirations for better governance and infrastructure have finally been addressed.

On behalf of the residents of Bir, Gunehar, Chougan, and Kyori, Sharma thanked the Chief Minister for approving the proposal and taking a step that could significantly shape the future of the region.
