Third Front Buzz in Himachal Politics: Disgruntled Leaders Eye New Alliance Ahead of 2027 Assembly Elections

Fresh buzz about the possible emergence of a “third front” is gaining momentum, fuelled largely by dissatisfaction among leaders within the two dominant parties — the Congress and the BJP.
With the 2027 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections still some distance away, political discussions in the hill state are already heating up. Fresh buzz about the possible emergence of a “third front” is gaining momentum, fuelled largely by dissatisfaction among leaders within the two dominant parties — the Congress and the BJP.
Political observers say murmurs of a new political alliance have been circulating in Himachal’s political corridors for the past week. The idea being explored is the creation of an alternative platform that could challenge the long-standing dominance of the two major parties in the state.
Ram Lal Markanday Confirms Ongoing Discussions
Former BJP minister and Lahaul-Spiti leader Ram Lal Markanday has acknowledged that conversations about forming a third political front are indeed taking place.
Speaking on Wednesday, Markanday said he has been reaching out to several leaders across the state to explore whether a broader political alliance could take shape.
“Though I have come to Hamirpur to attend a wedding function, it is true that I have been in touch with some leaders to explore the possibility of forging a third front with leaders from across the state,” he said.
He clarified that the discussions are still in the early stages but added that efforts are underway to identify potential candidates who could emerge as strong contenders if such a platform is eventually formed.
Discontent Within Major Parties Fuelling the Move
According to political insiders, several leaders who feel politically sidelined within their parties have been holding informal discussions in recent days.
These include politicians who were previously denied party tickets or believe they may struggle to secure nominations in the next Assembly elections. Reports also suggest that some Congress leaders uncertain about their future within the party could be quietly exploring the possibility of joining such an initiative.
Analysts believe that growing dissatisfaction among leaders from both camps could create favourable conditions for a new political formation if the discussions gather wider momentum.
Markanday’s Political Journey and Recent Setbacks
Markanday himself has experienced political turbulence in recent years. He contested the 2022 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections on a BJP ticket but was defeated.
Later, during the Lahaul-Spiti by-election in June 2024, he was denied a ticket by the party. He subsequently contested as an Independent candidate but was unable to secure a victory.
Despite these setbacks, he appears determined to remain politically active and is now exploring the possibility of building a broader political platform.
Statewide Outreach Underway
As part of these efforts, Markanday said he has already visited Mandi, Kullu and Bilaspur districts to hold discussions with political leaders and supporters.
He plans to continue this outreach in Solan, Hamirpur and Sirmaur, aiming to gauge public sentiment and assess the viability of forming a new alliance.
“We will prepare a proper manifesto and go to the people,” Markanday said, indicating that the idea is to offer voters a fresh political alternative in the state.
Chief Minister Sukhu Responds to Third Front Speculation
Responding to reports about the possible formation of a third front, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that such political efforts have surfaced in the state before as well.
He acknowledged that democracy always leaves room for new political formations but suggested that the BJP itself is currently dealing with internal divisions.
“There has always been scope for the emergence of a third front in Himachal,” Sukhu remarked, adding that the BJP appears to be divided into multiple factions.
Will Himachal See a New Political Alternative?
While the discussions are still at an exploratory stage, the buzz around a possible third front has already added a new layer of intrigue to Himachal Pradesh politics.
As the state gradually moves closer to the 2027 Assembly elections, political developments in the coming months could determine whether this initiative evolves into a serious electoral challenge or remains merely a political experiment.
