After nearly four years of silence on the tracks, train services on the historic Kangra Valley Railway line between Pathankot and Jogindernagar are finally set to resume from March 9. The Northern Railway has issued a fresh timetable and completed all necessary preparations to restart operations on this iconic narrow-gauge route.

The suspension of services had left thousands of residents without a crucial mode of transportation after the Chakki bridge collapsed nearly four years ago, disrupting rail connectivity across several parts of the Kangra Valley.

Four Trains to Run in the First Phase

According to a senior Indian Railways official, four trains will operate in both up and down directions during the initial phase of restoration.

  • Two trains will run between Pathankot and Baijnath
  • One train will operate on the Baijnath–Nurpur Road section
  • One train will run between Baijnath and Jwalamukhi Road

Railway authorities confirmed that the timetable has been finalized and all operational arrangements are in place to ensure a smooth restart of services from Monday.

Trial Runs and Safety Checks Completed

Officials from the Northern Railway’s Jammu Division said that trial runs and detailed safety inspections have already been successfully completed. With these formalities cleared, trains are now ready to return to the scenic route that connects several towns in the lower Himalayan region.

Major Relief for Kangra Valley Residents

The resumption of train services is expected to bring significant relief to residents of Kangra Valley, many of whom depend on the railway line for daily travel and transportation of goods.

The Kangra Valley Railway, known for its breathtaking mountain views and heritage value, is also a key driver of local tourism, trade, and economic activity in the region.

With trains back on track, local businesses, commuters, and tourists alike are hoping for a renewed boost in connectivity across the valley.

Local Leaders Welcome the Move

Kangra MP Rajiv Bhardwaj welcomed the restoration of services and credited the consistent efforts of local organizations and residents for keeping the issue alive.

He said the reopening of the railway line marks an important step toward improving connectivity and supporting the region’s economy.
