In a move that reflects a deeply human approach to governance, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has placed child nutrition and early childhood development at the very core of Himachal Pradesh’s policy framework.
Speaking about the state’s vision, the Chief Minister emphasised that good governance begins with caring for the youngest citizens. “With a clear focus on nutrition, quality education and inclusive growth, we are committed to ensuring that every child receives the support and opportunities needed to thrive,” he said.
Nutrition as the Foundation of Growth
Recognising that balanced food is critical not just for physical growth but also for mental well-being, the government has intensified efforts to secure the health of children across the state.
Currently, 18,925 anganwadi centres are functioning as pillars of community care in Himachal Pradesh, catering to both nutritional and early educational needs. During the ongoing financial year:
- ₹113 crore has been spent under the Anganwadi Services scheme
- ₹1,516.09 lakh has been utilised under the Special Nutrition Programme
These figures represent more than just numbers — they reflect a broader attempt to build a healthier and stronger next generation.
Anganwadi Centres Declared ‘Co-Schools’
In a progressive step towards holistic child development, the state government has declared all anganwadi centres as ‘anganwadi co-schools’. The initiative aims to integrate early childhood care with formal schooling, ensuring that children enter classrooms with a strong foundation.
To further strengthen this framework, 1,030 Saksham Anganwadi centres have been approved across the state, including 100 in the district of Chamba district.
Mukhyamantri Bal Poshan Aahar Yojana: Reaching Lakhs of Students
The government has also launched the Mukhyamantri Bal Poshan Aahar Yojana to extend nutritious meals to students in government schools. Under the scheme:
- 5.34 lakh students are receiving wholesome meals
- 15,181 government schools are covered statewide
The initiative ensures that nutrition does not become a barrier to learning — especially in rural and remote areas.
The Kitchen Garden Movement
Complementing these efforts is a highly successful kitchen garden movement implemented in 14,464 schools. Seasonal vegetables and herbs are grown through the collective efforts of mid-day meal workers, teachers, school management committees and students.
Beyond providing fresh produce, the initiative instills responsibility, awareness about nutrition, and community participation among children.
A Governance Model Rooted in Care
By prioritising nutrition and early education, the Himachal government is sending a strong message — that development is not merely about infrastructure or numbers, but about investing in children who represent the future of the state.
In a time when governance is often measured in statistics, this approach brings the focus back to something fundamental: the well-being of every child.
