In a case that highlights the growing menace of visa fraud, a woman from Punjab has been arrested for allegedly cheating a Shimla resident of 25 lakh on the false promise of arranging a Canadian visa.

The accused, identified as Manju Kumari, was arrested from Kharar in Mohali district after an extensive police operation.

According to the complaint filed at a Shimla police station, the victim, Bhavna, had been promised assistance in securing a Canadian visa. Trusting the accused, Bhavna and her family reportedly paid ₹25 lakh in hopes of fulfilling her dream of moving abroad. However, the promised visa never materialised.

The complaint was lodged by Bhavna’s brother after they realised they had been duped.

Following the registration of the case, Shimla Police launched a detailed investigation and sent teams to Punjab to track down the accused. Officials revealed that Manju Kumari allegedly kept changing her location and phone SIM cards in an attempt to avoid arrest.

Despite her efforts to evade authorities, she was finally traced and arrested from a flat in Kharar on February 22. She has since been brought back to Shimla for further investigation.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Singh confirmed the arrest and stated that the investigation is ongoing.

The incident serves as a reminder for individuals seeking overseas opportunities to verify the authenticity of agents and agencies before making large financial transactions. With rising aspirations to study or settle abroad, fraudulent visa scams continue to target unsuspecting families.

Police officials have urged citizens to remain cautious and report suspicious activities promptly.
