In a calm but firm response, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Prime Minister of Greenland, has declined an offer from former U.S. President Donald Trump to send an American hospital ship to the Arctic territory.

Speaking on Sunday, Nielsen made it clear that while Greenland values cooperation, it does not require external medical assistance.

“President Trump’s idea of sending an American hospital ship here to Greenland has been noted,” Nielsen wrote in a Facebook post. “But we have a public healthcare system where treatment is free for citizens. It is a deliberate choice.”

A Clear Message: Dialogue Over Declarations

Trump had earlier announced on social media that he was coordinating with Jeff Landry, Louisiana Governor and special envoy to Greenland, to dispatch a hospital vessel to the region.

However, Nielsen’s response carried a subtle yet unmistakable message — Greenland prefers conversation over unilateral announcements.

“But talk to us instead of just making more or less random outbursts on social media,” he added, signaling frustration over how the proposal was presented.

Background: Rising Arctic Tensions

This development comes amid ongoing diplomatic friction involving Greenland, Denmark, and the United States. The situation intensified after Trump repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, a strategically important Arctic territory.

Late last month, the three parties initiated diplomatic discussions to ease tensions that had spilled into the broader NATO alliance.

Adding another layer to the situation, Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command recently confirmed the evacuation of a crew member from a U.S. submarine operating near Greenlandic waters, just seven nautical miles from the capital city of Nuuk. The crew member required urgent medical treatment. It remains unclear whether Trump’s hospital ship proposal was connected to this incident.

Greenland’s Stand: Cooperation, Not Control

Greenland has consistently stated that it remains open to international cooperation — including with the United States — but on mutually respectful terms.

For many in Greenland, the hospital ship proposal is less about healthcare and more about sovereignty. With a publicly funded healthcare system already in place, the government sees no immediate need for foreign medical intervention.

As Arctic geopolitics continue to evolve, Nielsen’s response underscores a broader message: Greenland is willing to engage, but it expects to be heard — not spoken for.
