Senior bureaucrats who fail to respond to phone calls from elected representatives could face scrutiny after the issue was raised forcefully in the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday.
Congress MLA Rakesh Kalia, representing Gagret in Una district, expressed strong dissatisfaction over what he termed the indifferent attitude of certain officials. He alleged that several officers routinely ignore calls from MLAs, even when pressing public grievances are involved.
Kalia suggested that the government should reconsider the telephone allowances granted to such officers if they remain inaccessible to public representatives. His remarks received support from legislators across party lines, with members thumping their desks in agreement.
Speaker Calls It a “Grave Matter”
Taking serious note of the allegations, Kuldeep Pathania, Speaker of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha, described the issue as a grave matter.
He asked Kalia to submit in writing the names of officers accused of not responding to calls so that appropriate action could be initiated. Terming the allegation a “serious aspersion” on officials, Pathania assured the House that the matter would be formally examined once specific details were provided.
Warning of Protest
Kalia warned that if the situation persisted, he would stage a protest in the state capital along with 200 supporters. He urged the Chief Minister to take stern action against officers who, he said, were neglecting their duty toward elected representatives and, by extension, the public.
Concerns over the unresponsive conduct of senior bureaucrats have surfaced previously as well, with even ministers reportedly expressing resentment over the issue within party forums.
The debate underscores ongoing tensions between elected representatives and sections of the bureaucracy over accountability and responsiveness in governance.
