The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described India as a “very successful” emerging economy with growing global influence, calling it the “right place” to host the AI Impact Summit 2026.

The summit, scheduled from February 16–20, will be the first major AI summit hosted in the Global South and will focus on three principles:

  • People
  • Planet
  • Progress

🤖 AI Must Not Be Controlled by a Few

Guterres stressed that Artificial Intelligence must:

  • Benefit all of humanity
  • Include countries in the Global South
  • Not become a privilege of only developed nations
  • Avoid dominance by two superpowers (an apparent reference to the US and China)

He said it would be “totally unacceptable” if AI deepened global inequality.

🇮🇳 Why India?

According to Guterres:

  • India’s growing role in global affairs makes it a natural leader in AI governance.
  • As a major emerging economy, India can help shape a fair and inclusive AI ecosystem.
  • India sits at the center of a broader shift toward multipolarity — a world not dominated by one or two powers.

He plans to discuss this further with Narendra Modi during his visit.

🌐 Call for Multipolar World Order

Guterres reiterated his long-standing advocacy for:

  • A true multipolar global system
  • Greater representation of emerging economies
  • Reform of global institutions like the UN

He expressed frustration at the inability of the UN Security Council to effectively maintain peace, calling for reforms to reflect today’s global realities — not the post-World War II structure.

👥 Global Leaders & Tech CEOs Attending

The summit will bring together:

  • Emmanuel Macron
  • Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
  • Sundar Pichai
  • Shantanu Narayen
  • Dario Amodei

Senior UN officials attending include:

  • Volker Türk
  • Amandeep Singh Gill

🔎 Big Picture: Why This Matters

This summit represents:

  1. A shift toward Global South leadership in tech governance
  2. A push for inclusive AI development
  3. A broader geopolitical message about balancing global power

Guterres clearly sees India as central to shaping:

  • AI governance
  • Multilateral reform
  • A fairer global power structure
