Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated BNP leader Tarique Rahman on his decisive victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, reaffirming India’s support for a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Tarique Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on his party’s “decisive victory” in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.

In a post on X, Modi said Rahman’s victory reflected the trust reposed in him by the people of Bangladesh.

“I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh,” the Prime Minister said.

He further emphasised India’s continued commitment to supporting its eastern neighbour.

“India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals,” Modi added.

Political Transition in Bangladesh

The BNP on Friday claimed victory in the general elections, paving the way for a change in leadership after the interim administration took charge following the collapse of the Awami League government in August 2024.

Rahman is expected to lead the new government, marking a significant political shift in Bangladesh’s leadership after a period of political uncertainty.

India and Bangladesh share close economic, strategic and cultural ties, and New Delhi’s message signals continuity in bilateral engagement amid the political transition in Dhaka.
