A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia on February 10 has left 10 people dead — including the shooter — and around 25 injured, marking one of the deadliest school attacks in Canadian history.

Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia: A devastating mass shooting rocked this remote town in western Canada on Tuesday, leaving 10 people dead — including the suspected gunman — and around 25 others injured, authorities said.

The incident occurred at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in the afternoon, where police found multiple victims inside the building. Six people were confirmed dead at the school and another died while being transported to hospital. Two additional bodies were later discovered at a nearby residence believed to be linked to the attacker.

Quick Facts

  • Total fatalities: 10 (nine victims plus the suspected shooter)
  • Injuries: Around 25 people wounded, including several with serious or life-threatening injuries
  • Location: Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence in Tumbler Ridge, BC
  • Response: Police arrived within minutes and evacuated students and staff safely; a shelter-in-place alert was lifted later that day.

Suspect and Attack Details

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that the suspected shooter was found dead inside the school from an apparent self-inflicted injury. At this stage, authorities have not released an official motive or further details on the suspect’s identity.

Victims include school students and staff, as well as two people found at a residence that authorities believe was connected to the attack. Police say the school has around 175 students in grades 7–12.

Community and National Reaction

The attack has deeply shaken the tight-knit community of Tumbler Ridge, a town of about 2,400 residents. Local leaders and officials expressed profound sorrow, while British Columbia’s Premier and Canada’s Prime Minister offered condolences and support for victims’ families.

The school has been closed for the rest of the week, and counselling services are being provided for students, staff and families. Flags on federal and provincial buildings have been ordered to fly at half-mast.

Context

Mass shootings are rare in Canada, which has strict gun laws compared with its southern neighbour. Still, this attack is one of the deadliest in recent decades and has sparked widespread grief and calls for unity.
