Gauri Khan has redesigned her maternal family’s 1933 heritage home in Dalhousie, ‘The Chestnut Grove,’ transforming it into a luxury six-bedroom villa available for private stays at ₹1.2 lakh per night.

Dalhousie (Himachal Pradesh): Interior designer and film producer Gauri Khan has breathed new life into a cherished family property in Dalhousie, transforming it into a luxury heritage retreat. The six-bedroom estate, named The Chestnut Grove, belongs to her maternal uncle, Tejinder Tiwari, and holds deep emotional significance for her.

For Gauri, this was more than just another design project. The villa was the backdrop of her childhood summers, where she spent time with family and cousins. After an extensive renovation, the property has now opened its doors for private luxury stays.

A Legacy Since 1933

According to Gauri’s cousin Rustam Tiwari, who spoke to HT Lifestyle, the property was originally purchased in 1933 by their great-grandfather, Suraj Bhan Tiwari. Spread across approximately 8,000 square feet in the heart of Dalhousie, the home has remained in the family for generations.

The estate served as the central gathering place for family holidays, making it a house filled with memories and nostalgia.

Preserving Heritage, Adding Comfort

Gauri worked closely with Rustam to redesign the interiors while preserving the vintage character of the home. The aim was to retain its colonial-era charm while incorporating modern luxury and comfort.

Today, The Chestnut Grove is available for private bookings, primarily catering to families and small groups. Individual room tariffs range between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per night, depending on the season. Guests can also book the entire villa for approximately ₹1.2 lakh per night.

Inside the Villa

Nestled amid tall trees and lush greenery, the property offers serene views and a tranquil atmosphere. The spacious living room features large glass windows that flood the space with natural light, complemented by plush seating and a grand fireplace that adds warmth during colder months.

The home includes:

  • Garden-facing rooms
  • A luxurious king suite
  • An attic suite with rustic charm

Wooden ceilings, stone detailing and soft, elegant furnishings add to the heritage aesthetic. The dining area, highlighted by a skylight, remains bright and inviting throughout the year.

Designed Around Childhood Memories

Rustam revealed that Gauri was personally involved in every stage of the renovation. The design philosophy revolved around preserving the warmth and emotional essence of the house.

The goal, he said, was to recreate the comforting atmosphere of their childhood holidays — making guests feel at home while experiencing refined luxury.

With its blend of history, nostalgia and modern elegance, The Chestnut Grove now stands as a unique heritage getaway in the hills of Himachal Pradesh.
