The Kremlin has said that India is free to buy oil from any country it chooses, and that New Delhi’s move to diversify its crude suppliers is nothing unusual or new, in response to recent claims by US President Donald Trump.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Moscow was well aware that Russia has never been India’s sole supplier of oil and petroleum products, and that India has historically sourced crude from multiple countries. He stressed that there has been no official communication from India to Russia about halting purchases of Russian oil, despite assertions in some US statements linked to the new trade understanding.
Peskov described India’s energy diversification as standard practice and said there was nothing new or surprising about it, dismissing suggestions that the shift was directed against Russia. Experts also note that replacing Russian crude entirely would be difficult for Indian refiners due to differences in crude grades and volumes.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry added that the hydrocarbons trade has been mutually beneficial and contributes to global energy stability, and that Moscow stands ready to continue cooperation with New Delhi.
