Ex-Union Minister Anurag Thakur inaugurates modern sports gym at SAI centre in Hamirpur
Local MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday inaugurated a state-of-the-art sports gym constructed at a cost of ₹30 lakh at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centre of Excellence in Hamirpur district.

Speaking on the occasion, Thakur highlighted the importance of sports and physical fitness in shaping the younger generation. “Sports and regular exercise play a crucial role in keeping youth healthy, disciplined and motivated. Physical activity helps young people stay away from drugs and crime, while developing self-confidence and a sense of discipline,” he said.
He emphasised that sports is no longer just a recreational activity but has emerged as a viable and rewarding professional career path. “Indian athletes, both men and women, have made the country proud on the global stage. Their achievements show that excellence can be attained with proper training, dedication and the right opportunities,” he added.
Thakur also lauded the growing success of women athletes, noting their strong performances in international competitions across disciplines such as badminton, shooting, boxing and wrestling.
Encouraging budding sportspersons, he said that consistent training, discipline and hard work would help young athletes from Himachal Pradesh bring laurels to both the state and the nation at national and international levels.
Deepak Sharma, Zonal Head of the ICICI Foundation; Rajnesh Thakur, Project Manager; and Ajay Kumar, Development Officer of the ICICI Foundation, were also present during the inauguration ceremony.
