The Himachal Pradesh government has granted special remission to 397 eligible convicted prisoners lodged in various jails across the state on the eve of Republic Day 2026, officials said on Saturday.

The remission has been extended to inmates who maintained good conduct during their incarceration, in line with the state’s annual practice of offering relief on national occasions.

According to the notification, prisoners serving life sentences or terms exceeding 10 years have been granted 45 days’ remission. Those sentenced to more than five years and up to 10 years will receive 30 days’ remission, while inmates serving three to five years have been given 21 days’ relief.

Similarly, prisoners sentenced to one to three years will get 15 days’ remission, and those serving six months to one year have been granted seven days’ remission.

Abhishek Trivedi, Additional Director General of Prison and Correctional Services, said that out of 1,083 convicted prisoners currently lodged in state prisons, 397 will benefit from the government’s decision.

“The remission has been granted to prisoners who have maintained good conduct. It is part of the state government’s policy to encourage discipline and reform within correctional institutions,” he said.

The decision has been taken under Section 473 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, Section 432 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and Chapter XVIII of the Himachal Pradesh Jail Manual, 2021.

However, the remission will not apply to certain categories of prisoners, including detenues and those convicted under serious offences such as the NDPS Act, POCSO Act, Prevention of Corruption Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, terrorism-related cases, kidnapping for ransom, habitual offenders, parole jumpers, and other excluded categories specified in the official notification.

Authorities said the move aims to promote rehabilitation and reintegration while maintaining strict exclusions for serious crimes.Read Also : Himachal Governor, CM extend greetings on 56th Statehood Day, recall state’s journey and legacy
