At least five people were killed and 10 others injured after a suicide bomber detonated explosives during a wedding celebration at the residence of a local peace committee member in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday night, police said.

The blast occurred near Qureshi Morr in Dera Ismail Khan district at the home of peace committee chief Noor Alam Mehsud, where guests had gathered for the ceremony.

District Police Officer Sajjad Ahmed Sahibzada confirmed that the incident was a suicide attack. According to officials, guests were reportedly dancing when the explosion ripped through the house.

The powerful blast caused the roof of the room to collapse, hampering rescue efforts and making it difficult for responders to reach people trapped under the debris.

An emergency was declared at the District Headquarters Hospital, where the injured were shifted for treatment.

Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi said that five bodies and 10 injured persons had been transported to the hospital. Seven ambulances, along with fire and disaster response vehicles, were rushed to the spot to carry out the rescue operation.

Authorities immediately cordoned off the area and launched an investigation.

Initial reports suggested that peace committee leader Waheedullah Mehsud, also known as Jigri Mehsud, was among those killed in the blast.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the attack and sought a detailed report from the provincial inspector general of police, vowing that those responsible would be brought to justice.

The attack comes amid rising violence targeting local peace committee members in the region. Earlier this month, four members of a peace committee were killed in Bannu district. In November last year, seven people were killed when a peace committee office was attacked in the same district.

Police said that among those killed in that incident was a former militant who had surrendered to the state, along with his relatives.
