An unidentified person has been booked for allegedly duping a man of Rs 11.87 lakh by impersonating US billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and promising him lucrative gifts, including a Tesla car and gold.
According to the complainant, he was contacted by the accused while browsing the internet. The caller claimed to be Elon Musk and informed the victim that he had won a Tesla car along with gold and other attractive prizes. To make the offer appear genuine, the scammer also shared a contact number, claiming it belonged to the delivery team.
Lured by the false promise, the victim transferred money in multiple instalments, amounting to approximately Rs 11.87 lakh, purportedly towards delivery and processing charges. When the promised gifts were not delivered, the complainant realised he had been cheated and lodged a police complaint.
The police have registered a case against the unidentified accused under Section 318(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act, and an investigation has been initiated.
The police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and not fall prey to such online frauds. People who suspect or experience cyber fraud have been advised to immediately inform the cyber cell by dialling the toll-free cyber crime helpline number 1930.
