Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday announced a series of development initiatives for the Sulah Assembly constituency in Kangra district, including ₹1,500 per month financial assistance to eligible women under the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi Yojana.
Addressing a large public gathering in Sulah, the Chief Minister said the government was committed to accelerating the overall development of Kangra. He also announced the opening of a new Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board division in Sulah and granting municipal council status to Bhawarna to strengthen civic infrastructure.
Focus on tourism and employment
Sukhu said the ongoing expansion of Kangra airport would significantly boost tourism and create employment opportunities for local youth. “This will reduce the need for young people to migrate to cities like Delhi and Chandigarh in search of jobs,” he added.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to providing secure and long-term employment, the Chief Minister said Agniveers would be given priority in the recruitment of 800 police constables in the state. He also assured that selected candidates would receive service benefits up to the age of 58 along with the benefits of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
Education and healthcare upgrades
Highlighting improvements in the education sector, Sukhu said the state had climbed to fifth position in quality education rankings. He attributed this to reforms introduced by the present government, including English-medium education from Class I, adoption of the CBSE pattern in over 200 schools and the filling up of vacant teaching posts.
On healthcare, the Chief Minister said modern facilities on the lines of AIIMS would be introduced in all medical colleges and zonal hospitals, including Tanda Medical College and Palampur Hospital, within a year. He also announced that doctors would be posted in all Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and specialist doctors deployed in medical colleges within six months.
Attack on previous government
Taking a swipe at the previous BJP government, Sukhu alleged that despite receiving an additional revenue of ₹50,000 crore, funds were not utilised effectively. He said the present government was focused on transparency, curbing corruption and ensuring welfare schemes for vulnerable sections, including orphans, widows, persons with disabilities and the poor.
During the event, the Chief Minister also administered an oath to the public to raise awareness against drug abuse. Agriculture Minister Chaudhary Chandra Kumar, Chairman of the State Agriculture and Rural Development Bank Sanjay Singh Chauhan, and several other public representatives and senior officials were present.
