Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed that patients visiting government health institutions be provided quality medicines. He was chairing a meeting of senior officers of the Health Department here today.
The Chief Minister said the state government would soon invite tenders worth approximately ₹100 crore for the procurement of medicines manufactured by reputed pharmaceutical companies. He added that medicines would be procured directly from manufacturers to ensure the supply of quality drugs in government health institutions across the state.
Sukhu said that, if required, the state government would also amend the Drugs Act to safeguard public interest and ensure the availability of quality medicines. “The government is making continuous efforts to improve the health sector and several reforms are being implemented in this direction,” he said.
Emphasising that quality medicines are essential for better healthcare delivery, the Chief Minister said the government’s focus is to provide world-class health facilities to the people within the state itself.
He also directed the Himachal Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation to procure medicines for Jan Aushadhi and other medicine outlets directly from pharmaceutical companies instead of authorised dealers. He said there was no shortage of funds, but public money must be spent solely in the interest and welfare of the people.
Health Secretary Priyanka Basu Ingty, Managing Director of HP State Civil Supplies Corporation Rajeshwar Goyal, Special Secretary Health Jitender Sanjta, Director of Health Services Dr Gopal Beri and other senior officers were present in the meeting.
