Donald Trump Threatens 200% Tariff on French Wines as Pressure Mounts on Macron Over ‘Board of Peace’
US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose a steep 200 per cent tariff on French wines and champagnes, claiming the move would pressure French President Emmanuel Macron to join his proposed “Board of Peace” initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts.
US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose a steep 200 per cent tariff on French wines and champagnes, claiming the move would pressure French President Emmanuel Macron to join his proposed “Board of Peace” initiative aimed at resolving global conflicts.
Responding to a reporter’s question about Macron’s reported refusal to join the board, Trump said, “Did he say that? Well, nobody wants him because he will be out of office very soon.”
“I’ll put a 200 per cent tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join — but he doesn’t have to join,” Trump added.
However, France is not inclined to accept the invitation at this stage, a source close to Macron said on Monday.
Trump first floated the idea of creating the Board of Peace last September while outlining his plan to end the war in Gaza. Invitations sent to world leaders last week indicate the body would have a broader mandate to address conflicts across the globe.
According to a draft charter reviewed by Reuters, the US administration has invited around 60 countries to join the initiative. The document states that member nations would be required to contribute $1 billion in funding if they wish to retain membership beyond three years.
The proposal has drawn cautious reactions from governments, with diplomats warning that the initiative could undermine the role of the United Nations in global conflict resolution.
Meanwhile, Trump also revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to join the Board of Peace. “He’s been invited,” Trump said.
