‘No Intimidation Will Influence Us’: Emmanuel Macron Vows United European Response on Ukraine, Greenland
French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday issued a firm rebuke to US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats linked to Greenland, calling them “unacceptable” and warning that Europe will respond in a united and coordinated manner if such measures are implemented.
French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday issued a firm rebuke to US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats linked to Greenland, calling them “unacceptable” and warning that Europe will respond in a united and coordinated manner if such measures are implemented.
In a post on X, Macron said France would not be swayed by “intimidation or threats” and reaffirmed support for the sovereignty of Ukraine and Greenland.
“No intimidation or threat will influence us—neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world when we are confronted with such situations,” Macron said.
He stressed that using tariffs as leverage over territorial or security issues was inappropriate.
“Tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context. Europeans will respond in a united and coordinated manner should they be confirmed. We will ensure that European sovereignty is upheld,” he added.
Macron said France’s foreign policy was rooted in respect for the sovereignty and independence of nations, principles that guide its actions in Europe and beyond.
“It is on this basis that we support, and will continue to support Ukraine, and that we have built a coalition of the willing for a robust and lasting peace,” he said, referring to France’s continued backing of Kyiv.
The French president also defended France’s participation in a military exercise organised by Denmark in Greenland, saying security in the Arctic was a matter of European concern.
“Security in the Arctic and at the outer edges of our Europe is at stake. We fully assume this decision,” Macron said.
The remarks came amid rising tensions after Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark and several European countries unless they agree to the US purchase of Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said 10% tariffs would be imposed from February 1, 2026, rising to 25% from June 1, 2026, on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, until a deal is reached.
Trump has argued that Greenland is critical to US national security, citing growing interest from China and Russia, and has repeatedly insisted on acquiring the territory. Denmark and Greenland’s leaders have firmly rejected the proposal, emphasising the island’s right to self-determination.
The European Union has reportedly called an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss the proposed tariffs and coordinate a response.
Trump’s stance has sparked protests in Denmark and Greenland and drawn sharp criticism across Europe, with leaders warning that linking trade measures to territorial demands risks undermining transatlantic relations and NATO unity.
