Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday held separate telephone conversations with the leaders of Iran and Israel, offering Moscow’s mediation and calling for constructive dialogue amid heightened tensions in West Asia and US threats of a possible strike on the Islamic Republic.

According to a Kremlin statement, Putin spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the evolving situation in West Asia and concerns surrounding Iran. “The Russian side confirmed its commitment to continuing mediation efforts and promoting a constructive dialogue involving all concerned parties,” the statement said.

Putin also spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who briefed him on Tehran’s efforts to stabilise the country amid widespread protests triggered by an economic crisis. Pezeshkian said the Iranian government was taking sustained measures to normalise the situation, the Kremlin added.

Meanwhile, Iranian opposition figure Reza Pahlavi urged the international community to intensify pressure on the authorities in Tehran to support protesters seeking to end clerical rule, even as the government’s deadly crackdown appears to have largely suppressed demonstrations.

Observers note that the immediate prospect of a US military strike on Iran has receded, as the Ayatollah-led regime’s crackdown has, for now, brought protests under control.
