Kangra–Chamba Lok Sabha MP Dr Rajiv Bhardwaj on Monday proposed the establishment of a Buddhist university in Dharamsala during a meeting with members of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile at McLeodganj.
Kangra–Chamba Lok Sabha MP Dr Rajiv Bhardwaj on Monday proposed the establishment of a Buddhist university in Dharamsala during a meeting with members of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile at McLeodganj.
The meeting was attended by the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and other members of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, during which detailed discussions were held on the prevailing situation in Tibet and the deep historical, spiritual and cultural ties between India and Tibet.
Addressing the Tibetan MPs, Dr Bhardwaj said he represents a parliamentary constituency that is home to the 14th Dalai Lama, whom he described as a global symbol of peace, compassion and non-violence. He assured the Tibetan leadership that he would raise their concerns before the Central Government whenever assistance or support was required.
Dr Bhardwaj emphasised that India-Tibet relations are deeply rooted in shared human values, spirituality and culture. He said India has always provided respect, security and a sense of belonging to the Tibetan community living in exile.
Members of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile expressed gratitude to the Government of India and the Indian people, stating that the survival and continued existence of the Tibetan community-in-exile has been possible because of India’s unwavering support. They described India as a constant source of hope for Tibet.
Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament Dolma Tsering recalled former Prime Minister Morarji Desai’s words that “India and Tibet are branches of the same tree,” adding that historically India has been the guru while Tibet has been the disciple.
Concluding the meeting, Dr Bhardwaj announced his intention to pursue a proposal in Parliament for setting up a Buddhist university in Dharamsala. He said the proposed institution would serve as a global centre for Buddhist philosophy and promote values of peace, compassion and non-violence.
BJP state spokesperson Sanjay Sharma, district BJP president Sachin Sharma, state media co-in-charge Advocate Vishwa Chakshu and former Dharamsala Mayor Omkar Singh Naharia were also present at the meeting.
